It was in 1905 that Einstein's seminal paper on Brownian motion was published. In this paper Einstein laid the foundations for the description of fluctuations. He earned the Nobel Prize in Physics 1921 for his contributions to theoretical physics and the description of the photo electric effect. The field of colloid science has benefited significantly from his work. Einstein related the Brownian motion of dispersed particles to the motion of the embedding liquid. His work was the basis of experimental work, for which Perrin got the Nobel price. Many new developments have followed, for instance in the fields of biological systems and molecular motors.
