Biography:

Phil Ludwig has been working with families and their teens for 27 years. Phil’s reputation for his experience and knowledge of family relationships has led him to speak on the radio and television programs of many notable leaders such as author and television host Dr. Josh McDowell, Dr. Henry Cloud, Dr. John Townsend, Steve Arterburn, Dr. Paul Meier, and many others. Phil has also given presentations at churches, schools, conventions, M.O.P.S meetings, and numerous other special groups.
In addition to this, Phil is the founder and CEO of Teen Rescue, Inc., a nationwide referral service for families with struggling teens established in 1989. He is also the Executive Director of Julian Youth Academy, a residential boarding school for troubled teens started and operated by Teen Rescue. Due to these ministries, Phil has years of experience consulting and advising hundreds of struggling families and troubled teens. As a part of the Julian Youth Academy program, Phil also leads parent meetings every other week and holds bi-annual weekend seminars for the parents of the students at Julian Youth Academy, speaking about parenting skills, conflict management, setting boundaries, managing anger, and many other issues common to family relationships. Drawing from his years of experience, he has also written material for parents with struggling teens.
Phil also has a unique background that has allowed him to help people in moments of extreme crisis. Phil was a police officer with the San Diego Police Department where he had a very successful career, receiving 17 accommodations for his service, including an exceptional performance award given to him by the mayor of San Diego. After retiring from the police department, he personally rescued a girl from a bridge who was ready to commit suicide, pulled a man from a burning car, and delivered a baby in the front seat of a car.
Part of the reason Phil is able to speak insightfully on these issue is due to the fact that he has been on the other side of tragedy as well. While he was on duty as a police officer, he was involved in many traumatic situations such as being involved in a shooting, and three months later, Phil’s police partner and friend was shot and killed on duty. Phil eventually was involved in a serious traffic accident causing him an injury that forced him into retirement.
However, the biggest and most difficult loss in Phil’s life came shortly after opening Julian Youth Academy with his first wife, Kim. She was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and died four months later. This left Phil to be a single parent of his own two sons, in addition to fulfilling his call to help troubled families through Teen Rescue and Julian Youth Academy. It was not until July of 2003 that Phil was remarried to Lynn Balderas, who had been widowed and survived pancreatic cancer. Phil and his two sons currently live with Lynn and her two daughters in Southern California. Three months after their marriage, when it seemed like things had calmed down in Phil’s life, the Julian Youth Academy campus burned to the ground in the 2003 Cedar Fires. Despite all these hardships, Phil has been able to continue his service at Teen Rescue and Julian Youth Academy in addition to continuing to give public presentations, using his own difficult experiences and his experiences working with families to inspire and restore families.
