Allen has been involved in computers since high school, when he started selling Apples at the local computer store. By the time he was a senior, he was managing three of the stores, and in fact, he missed his own graduation ceremony because of his management responsibilities!
As the main support guy for the company's number one salesperson, he learned that there's a big difference between what goes on in a software demonstration and an actual installation, and he learned how to make software meet the expectations, goals and objectives of the end-user. This experience would be invaluable later, in Bridgett's dental practice, when he assumed the role of "chief PracticeWorks implementer and customizer." That's when the promise they saw in PracticeWorks when they bought it started to become reality.
Although he's every bit as much a gadget geek as Joel, he doesn't believe in using technology just because it's possible. A perfect example is his insistence that their practice be "chartless," but not "paperless," because in some cases, paper makes more sense to use and keep than any high tech replacement. But once he does decide to use a new technology, he can wring every bit of practical benefit from it - his implementation of PracticeWorks is just one example.
A "card carrying cheapskate," he's constantly looking for ways to keep more of what the practice produces, and almost gleefully shares his cheapskate secrets with anyone who will listen. You're almost guaranteed to learn at least one thing from any seminar Allen teaches or article that Allen writes.
Over the past 20 years, Allen has helped hundreds of dental practices implement high tech in their practices. Many of these have been PracticeWorks users, but more have not. He's conducted seminars for PracticeWorks users in the US and Australia.
