Lodging

Here's a list of Web sites -- and their quirks -- that can help you root out good deals on hotel rooms.

SITE

COMMENTS
Travelweb.com 2003 launch - controlled by five hotel companies - Marriott, Starwood (Westin, Sheraton, etc.), Hyatt, Hilton and Six Continents (Holiday Inn & InterContinental)
Expedia.com User-friendly site, though it charges a $25 change or cancellation fee for many discounted rooms.
Hotels.com Site is tougher to navigate, though its change/cancel fee is only $20.
Hotwire.com A wildcard -- sometimes its blind offers (you don't know what hotel you're choosing until after you agree to buy) yield the best rates of all.
Orbitz.com Offers some rates from Travelweb, the company owned by the big hotel chains.
Priceline.com Has the most rock-bottom deals and requires the most risk, since the site decides which hotel will house you and you have to bid for it.
Travelocity.com Partners with hotels.com, which means many of its rooms show up here.
BiddingForTravel.com Recently successful bids are posted here.

Hotel Industry Makes Room for Online Bookings

Ifyou choose not to stay in the hotel list given by the seminar organizers, this site lists more than 120,000 rentals run by professional management companies. You can feel more at home and avoid annoyances like elevators and intrusive maids. However, you will only find help in Canada, the U.S., Mexico and the Caribbean.

San Francisco Dining

SITE DESCRIPTION EASE OF USE COMMENT
forfoodies.com San Francisco Conventions and Visitors Bureau site promoting Bay Area restaurants, wineries and cooking schools Organized into info-rich sections about food, wine and events; many photos Top Choice Unique features include a wine-pairing database. a Foodie Quiz, and special offers from restaurants.
allaroundsanfrancisco.com Site from All Around, a publisher of Internet travel guides of cities around the world. Restaurant listings are limited, but the site highlights some of the best places in the city. Rich in inside information -- like the fact that the best Chinese food isn't found in Chinatown.
swine-and-dine.com/SFrest.htm Reviews of many Bay Area restaurants by a food lover who identifies him/herself as "The Fun Hog" Bare-bones, both in presentation (it's nearly all text) and in tone (one dish is described as "not so bad.") Unlike most restaurant critics, this one considers the cost of the meal: "good food ... but a little too pricey."
fudcourt.com Three local buddies teamed up to create this irreverent celebration of cheap Bay Area füd, as they call it. Smart alecky gimmicks are rather amusing -- i.e. the ratings system that awards corn-dog icons to good food and cockroaches to bad. Don't miss the reviewer of a Vietnamese restaurant who says he gained his expertise while interned in a Vietnamese Communist re-education camp.
tofuguide.com Guide to meat-free restaurants in various locations, including San Francisco, the spiritual homeland of vegetarianism Not enough reviews nor information about each restaurant. Where's the Beef? The site's few reviews are amatuerish. One sample: "This place is all vegan, duh."

How to Get Markdowns on Haute Cuisine

THE DEAL HOW IT WORKS THE CATCH
Dinnerbroker.com Book online at one of about 250 restaurants (eg: Aubergine in Los Angeles). Restaurants automatically take 10% to 30% off your check -- you don't even have to ask. To get most deals, you need to book at off-peak times, like before 7 p.m. or after 9:30. But there's no shame factor: Even if the restaurant fails to honor the discount, you don't need to confront the waiter; Dinnerbroker will cut you a check later.
Restaurant.com Buy a discount "gift certificate" (a $50 certificate costs you only $25) for one of 3,000 eateries on Restaurant.com -- or bid for one on eBay.com. After dinner, just slip the certificate in with payment. The "gift certificate" euphemism reduces the stigma of using what is, essentially, a coupon. Warning: Some come with restrictions, so read the fine print online.
iDine.com Buy a $49 annual membership at iDine.com. Then eat at one of about 7,000 participating places (such as Olives in Boston). A couple days after the meal, a 20% discount will show up on your credit card. iDine deals don't kick in if you used other discounts -- no double-dipping. Also some restaurant permit the discounts only at off-peak times.
Frequent-Diner Programs Restaurants are increasingly doing this to encourage repeat business. Remi in New York's theater district hands diners a coupon for 15% off the next visit; Saddle's Steakhouse in Sonoma, Calif., gives regulars a 10%-off "club card." These deals can be very low profile, so you may need to call the restaurant and ask if one exists.
Mailing/E-Mail Lists Places like Morton's Steakhouses and Fiamma and Ruby Foo's in New York are increasingly relying on direct-mail campaigns and e-mail blitzes to promote deals. To get on a list, contact the restaurant and ask to be included. Once they have your contact info, be prepared for a deluge: Some restaurants alert you to practically every menu change.
The "Prix-Fixe" Phenomenon "Prix-fixe" meals -- where appetizer, entree, and dessert are all offered for one price -- are an increasingly popular way of discreetly discounting fancy food. Selection can be limited to a few items or just one -- and it's usually the humbler dishes, not truffles and foie gras.

Airports

Get specific information from these internet-helpful airports: (see AIRLINES for further information)

AIRPORT INFORMATION SOURCES NO. OF CHECKPOINTS TIPS
Hartsfield Atlanta General line: (404) 530-7300, 8 a.m.-5 p.m.; parking hotline: (404) 530-6725. Atlanta-Airport.com's Trac-a-Flight sends flight-status info to a pager or cellphone. One major checkpoint with 18 lanes: Be ready for big crowds. Frequent travelers say lines for "T" gates can move faster. When lines get long at the main curbside check-in, try Delta's additional curbside check-in on lower level of South Terminal.
Chicago O'Hare General line: (800) 832-6352. Ohare.com -- Offers a Webcam view of the front of the airport to gauge crowds (but no view of security checkpoints). Ten. Airport official says travelers can use only the one for their carriers. But you can use any checkpoint to reach your gate. Short-short term parking now costs $3 for three hours compared to the old rate of $8.
Denver International One of the rare airports to report wait times at security checkpoints, updated every 30 minutes; call (303) 342-8477. Three. Two in main terminal. But once you cross a bridge, there's a third on the way to Concourse A. Its lanes can be shorter. Hospitality ambassadors in denim, brown vests and white cowboy hats will fan out across the airport.
Boston Logan General line: 1-800-23-logan. Massport.com strives to reassure passengers about security. Fourteen for five terminals. On Monday began operating monitors at American, US Airways and United counters that play a video on getting through security.
Los Angeles General line: (310) 646-5252. Lawa.org doesn't say when to get to airport, steering passengers to airlines, but it does warn travelers to allot extra time during peak hours. Eleven. Lines have shrunk after 450 screeners were added. Also, American's Terminal Four requires boarding passes at security. United offers two express checkpoint lanes for passengers with one or fewer carry-on bags.
Dallas/Fort Worth General line: (972) 574-8888. DFWairport has link to FAA info site to check on delays around the country. Has an audio link to airport parking hotline (972-574-park). Seventeen. "More than 90%" of people get through checkpoints in 10 minutes, says an airport spokesman. New "Express Parking" offers luggage assistance and car-to-gate transport service to the terminal for $9 a day.
Houston airports (George Bush Intercontinental /Hobby Int'l.) General line: (281) 233-3000. Houstonairports feels cluttered, with weather and traffic advisories. Note links to different Web sites for the two local airports. Five in Intercontinental and three in Hobby. Warning: Travelers must use checkpoint that corresponds with terminal they're flying from. Both airports are in the midst of a massive expansion. Expect possible construction-related delays in the neighborhood.
Seattle-Tacoma International General line: (206) 431-4444. PortSeattle.org -- takes the time for etiquette; advises not making jokes when answering security questions. Five. Airport is in the midst of a $2 billion-plus expansion. "Pathfinders" -- staffers wearing red jackets -- will seek out passengers who look confused.
Phoenix Sky Harbor General line: (602) 273-3300. Phxskyharbor.com is easy to navigate. Check AmericaWest.com for a breakdown of wait times at check-in. Six. A special holiday parking lot, containing 1,800 spaces, opened Tuesday. Price is $15 for one week, compared with normal airport terminal parking fee of $16 a day.
Detroit Airport General line: (734) 247-7678; parking info: (800) 642-1978; Web site MetroAirport.com. Seven. But the four in McNamara Terminal are testing new security procedures: A boarding pass is needed. Hint: Use e-ticket kiosks in parking garage. Special holiday program: Park in short term for up to 45 minutes for a buck

Cruises

Prow's Edge: Premier cruise magazine with cruise news, views and feature articles on cruising, cruise lines and cruise ports of call.

iCruise.com: Search by cruise destination, dates and price to find bargains.

CruiseCritic.com: You can browse advertised cruise prices, as well as cruise gossip in the message boards-sometimes from hard-core cruise regulars who give their unvarnished reviews, and sign their names with a list of cruises on which they have sailed.

Major Cruise Lines: American Canadian Caribbean Line Carnival Cruises Celebrity Cruises Clipper Cruise Line Cruise West Crystal Cruises Cunard Line Delta Queen Steamboat Co Disney Cruise Line Holland America Norwegian Cruise Line Princess Cruises Radisson Seven Seas Cruises Regal Cruises Royal Caribbean International Seabourn Cruise Line Society Expeditions Windjammer Barefoot Cruises Windstar Cruises World Explorer Cruises

Cruise lines keep passengers online while they're at sea:

Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines: With an eye cocked to the sailing businessman as well as to the leisure passenger, this line's ships have wired their conference rooms and other areas for audio, video and computer PowerPoint presentations.

Throughout the fleet, Internet-capable computers have been installed in the library, business center or other public areas. On some ships, passengers also can use these computers to book their shore excursions. Some newer ships are being fitted with in-cabin Internet ports for guests traveling with laptops.

Carnival Cruise Lines: Carnival is installing Internet cafes on all of its ships. Also on the high-tech front, the line is proud of the new infrared listening devices it is installing on its some of its vessels to help the hearing-impaired. Available in the main show lounge, the special earphones are provided without charge.

Crystal Cruises: In addition to a wide variety of TV programming, Crystal guests may borrow VHS tapes or DVD disks to play on TVs in their own staterooms.

On some of Crystal's ships, children's game rooms have Sony Play Stations, along with some PCs equipped with games and educational software.

Access to the Web in Crystal's Internet cafes run $1.25 a minute. For passengers who lack an e-mail address, Crystal will provide them with one for the duration of the voyage.

Seabourn Cruise Line: Seabourn, too, has free VHS tapes for passengers to use on their cabin TVs. Internet access in the computer center is 50 cents a minute. Personal laptop access, however, is forbidden. In 2003, Seabourn is installing a new Bose/CD stereo system in the staterooms. It is also planning to create a complimentary "Seabourn Sounds" compilation CD that guests can take with them at cruise's end.

Norwegian Cruise Lines: The line says it's the first major operator to have opened an Internet café. In 1999, Norwegian placed nine computers inside the existing Coffee Bar.

Today it takes pride in its modern remote wireless Internet access system, which is being installed across the fleet. Passengers can bring their laptops on board, get a wireless network card from the purser, and then be able to access the Internet from several locations throughout the ship.

There are no plans for a cabin laptop hookup such as offered by Celebrity Cruises, however. Cost for the Norwegian service is $10 a day. And if a passenger doesn't have his own laptop, he or she can rent one for $35 a day.

Princess Cruises: Princess didn't answer our survey, but the line does offer an AOL Internet Café on both the Grand Princess and the Star Princess. There's no way to send attached picture files, but each of the flat screen displays on the computers is wired with a camera so your friends at home can see you sitting at a Princess computer in the Internet café.

Unlike on most other ships, America Online members can also use the popular chat facility to type in real time to land-locked AOL friends.

High technology can be appreciated also in the video game room on the Grand Princess, which spreads out the grandest electronic fun facility I have seen in two decades of traveling on cruise ships.

Radisson Seven Seas: Facilities vary somewhat among Radisson ships, but all feature computer classes and 24-hour Internet access ($1 per kilobyte or in some cases, 75 cents per minute).

The company's five ships have relatively few Internet capable computers, especially small vessels such as the Paul Gauguin and the Song of Flower.

Some cabins on the Diamond and the Navigator have data ports in the cabin that can be used by laptops with a modem. Many will consider the costs prohibitive, however: $15 a minute on the Diamond, or $6.50 per minute on the Navigator or the Mariner.

  • When is it usually less crowded?
